‘Edge of Tomorrow’ trailer promises to be better than ‘Oblivion’

Tom Cruise’s next sci-fi action flick, Edge of Tomorrow, received its first trailer today and it looks like both like the spiritual successor to Cruise’s last sci-fi flick, Oblivion, but also has a distinct Halo-ish feel to it.  It strikes me as a sequel to Oblivion but faster paced and with a better story.

The story revolves around Cruise’s character, Lt. Col. Bill Cage who is demoted for whatever reason during humanity’s fight for survival against a telepathic alien species.  Cage is then sent to the front lines of battle, something he’s never done before, and is killed after making contact with a “Mimic” fighter (aliens…).  This causes Cage to be thrown in to a time loop where he has to live his last day on Earth over and over.  However, with each passing day he has to relive he’s able to grow stronger and smarter as a weapon against the aliens.

The trailer doesn’t do a great job of letting the audience know that Cruise’s character dies and he’s reliving his last day, but the trailer does do enough to make me want to see more.  Which is the point, I guess.

Emily Blunt co-stars in a role we’ve never really seen her in before.

Edge of Tomorrow is out June 2014.
