Report: James Spader to play villain in ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’

One great casting choice deserves another odd choice all the same.  Warner Bros. is not the only studio who can announce casting news for an upcoming superhero film as Marvel has announced that actor James Spader has been cast to play villain Ultron in the upcoming sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Spader has long been known as a character television actor for his roles in The Practice, Boston Legal, and most recently The Office.  However, he did spend most of his early career in film starring in movies such as Less Than Zero, Sex Lies and Videotape as well as Pretty in Pink.

The Wrap first had the scoop that the actor would be playing the villain in Marvel’s sequel.  Ultron is character from Marvel’s comics as a robot created by scientist Hank Pym (Ant-Man) with superior intelligence.  The robot quickly becomes self aware and hellbent on destruction.  It’s not been made known how Joss Whedon is going to incorporate Ultron in to his version of The Avengers as Hank Pym has not been cast (and no one really knows the story behind the film) for the movie.

Spader was probably not on the first or first 50 choice lists for villains in a superhero film but he’s an interesting choice none the less.
