Matt Damon’s realistic sci-fi action thriller Elysium debuted in the top spot this weekend but it didn’t pull in the numbers that critics originally thought it would. With a budget of $115M, the film only managed to pull in $30M. While $30M isn’t terrible, it’s certainly not what is expected from an action title from an A-list star like Damon.
The weekends big winner is probably the ensemble comedy We’re The Millers, bringing in $26.5M over the weekend, but with a Wednesday release the film has already pulled in $38M, more than its budget of $37M.
Third this weekend at the box office was the Disney animated feature Planes, a Cars-like film, that was panned by critics and only managed to pull in $22M. The film, which uses a lot of stock footage, only had a budget of $50M – relatively low for a Disney animated film.
Rounding out the top five at the box office was the action-adventure title Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and the Mark Wahlberg/Denzel Washington action film 2 Guns. The films made $14M and $11M respectively.
