Has Menace been confirmed as a villain in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’?

Every good superhero movie needs good characters but better than that, they all need good villains.  Just ask Batman fans who were treated to some of the best villains ever portrayed on screen by Christopher Nolan.  However, your superhero movie can only have one main villain but other supporting villains lest it become so convoluted that instead of The Dark Knight you get Spider-Man 3.

As San Diego’s Comic Con gets ready to kick off this weekend, everyone’s scrambling to get the scoop on the latest and greatest, which includes Sony’s upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.   The film, which brings back Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacey, other new characters from the comics will be making their first appearance in the web slinger’s universe.

Speaking recently with View London, Felicity Jones – who has been cast in the film but her character has not been announced – stated that she’s set to place “the Goblin’s girlfriend”.  Now, if you’re up-to-date on your Spider-Man lore, this “Goblin” she’s likely referring to is the Green Goblin/Harry Osbourne – Peter Parker’s best friend, who is being played by Dane Dehaan.  Jones goes on to say that “I’m in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I’m on the dark side.”  Now, speculation points to her stating that she’s “on the dark side” meaning she’s to be a villain as well.

Harry Osbourne’s girlfriend in the comic books is none other than Lily Hollister, who comes in to contact with the serum that transforms Harry into the Goblin and makes Hollister take on the persona of the villain Menace.  Now, so many villains in one movie would spoil so many things, but I have a feeling some of these characters aren’t going to get their time in the spotlight until The Amazing Spider-Man 3 or 4.   Sony and Marc Webb have already stated that these Spider-Man films are part of a larger Spider-Man universe – think Marvel’s The Avengers but on a smaller, more refined scale.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already has Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and Green Goblin/Harry Osbourne (Dane Dehaan).  So any other potential villains that pop up will likely just be an allusion to or cameo spot.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due out next summer.
