It’s been a while since I could safely say that Tom Hanks has been acting at an “Oscar caliber” level, but upon seeing the first trailer for Disney’s upcoming film, Saving Mr. Banks, I think I’m ready to give him the title back.
The film, starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, takes place at the height of Disney’s popularity – back when the golden age of animated films were just starting to take off. The plot of the film has Disney trying to adapt the story of Mary Poppins into a feature film and trials and tribulations the company goes through in attempts to please author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson).
The trailer, which like all good trailers, never gives too much away but captures the charisma that Walt Disney had about him and (from everything I’ve read about her) the stubbornness Travers had about her and the guarded outlook she had for her story about an English nanny. Quite frankly, the film looks fantastic and with a release date of December 13th in the US it appears Disney will be marketing the film during Oscar season. Both Hanks and Thompson should receive worthy Oscar buzz for the film.
The film also stars Paul Giamatti, Colin Farrell, Ruth Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman.
