Independence Day Weekend Box Office – ‘Despicable Me 2’ makes ‘The Lone Ranger’ look silly

Posted: July 7, 2013 in Movies

I think it’s safe to say that Disney will soon start shying away from live-action Western blockbusters.  First it was John Carter being a huge flop then it was the recently released Gore Verbinski western, The Lone Ranger.   Not even Johnny Depp could save The Lone Ranger.   And the film that made The Lone Ranger look completely silly?  Despicable Me 2, which debuted to a whopping $142M.  The Steve Carrell voiced animated film was so strong it nearly tripled every other film’s five day gross.

Second was The Lone Ranger which totaled only $49M through five days.  It’s such a disappointment that I seriously doubt that Disney will even think about green-lighting a sequel anytime soon.

Third at the box office this holiday weekend was the Melissa McCarthy/Sandra Bullock buddy cop comedy The Heat, which pulled in $25M over the extended weekend.  It brings the film’s two week gross to nearly $86M.  It pretty much certifies that any film with McCarthy as its star is going to make $100M guaranteed.

Rounding out the top five was Disney’s certified hit Monsters University and Brad Pitt’s World War Z.  The film’s pulled in $19.5M and $18.2M respectively.
