‘The Spectacular Now’ appears to be ‘The Notebook’ for a new generation

After watching the first trailer for James Ponsoldt’s (Smashed) upcoming coming-of-age film The Spectacular Now, I’m nearly convinced – without seeing it – that it is The Notebook for a new generation.  Meaning, what Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams brought to teens and young adults in the early 00’s, Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley look to have brought that spark to 2013.

The film stars Teller playing Sutter Keely, your prototypical uber-popular high school senior who has everything going in his life at the present time.  Until one day he meets not your ordinary “girl next door” in Aimee Finicky – Shailene Woodley – and his world is completely turned upside down with unknown ambitions and desires.  Teller will never be confused with Gosling in the looks department, and maybe not even the acting department, but Teller’s genuineness throughout the trailer (and keep in mind that the only people to have seen this movie were those in attendance at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year) gives me high hopes.  Woodley had her coming out party in last year’s The Descendants opposite George Clooney, so we already know that she can act her ass off.

Rotten Tomatoes already has the film at a 86%, and it doesn’t release nationwide until August 2.   Can you tell that this trailer impressed me?
