Pixar still rules all. That’s really never been debatable, however the studio’s films – the past three years – haven’t been up to par with what we’re used to. The Toy Story 3’s and Up’s of the world seem to be something of the past as Cars 2, Brave, and even their newest animated feature – Monsters University – reportedly isn’t what we’re used to. Monsters University, the prequel to Monsters, Inc., opened this weekend to $82M large. It was good enough to beat out Brad Pitt’s World War Z and is the studio’s largest opening since Toy Story 3 (which made $110M its opening weekend).
Second this weekend was World War Z, the zombie-esque apocalypse thriller starring Brad Pitt. The funny thing about WWZ was that the film went through a rather turbulent filming process and production process, being delayed and was even in danger of not happening. Even Brad Pitt’s presence wasn’t good enough for first place as the film pulled in $66M. While anything north of $50M is nothing to scoff at, when your film costs $190M to make, you need every penny you can get.
Coming in at third place this weekend was last weeks big winner, Man of Steel. The Warner Bros. produced film dropped significantly totaling just $41M. However, this weekend’s totals were good enough for the movie to pass $200M domestically. The film has made nearly $300M worldwide with talks of a sequel already begun.
Rounding out the top five was the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy This Is The End, which has done particularly well, made $13M this weekend. Fifth was the pesky mystery/thriller Now You See Me, which has managed to stick around despite having mediocre reviews, pulling in nearly $8M.
