Weekend Box Office – ‘Man of Steel’ dominates

Posted: June 16, 2013 in Movies

Leading up to the release of Warner Bros. & Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel it was largely thought that the film was going to dominate the critics reviews as well as the box office.  One of those things did not happen as critics either loved the film or they hated it, there didn’t seem to be an in-between.  The Rotten Tomatoes review score sits at 57% right now, and that’s unfortunate because the film is much better than that.  Either way, the film did dominate the box office like everyone thought to the tune of $125M its opening weekend.  The film cost $225M to make, so the domestic gross is half that but the worldwide gross stands at $195M, so the film is well on its way to making its budget back.

Second at the box office this weekend was the other new release film, This Is The End, the ensemble comedy starring Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and others.  The film officially opened on Wednesday to get a jump start on the competition, making $32M in five days.  Considering the movie only cost $32M in the first place, it’s officially a hit.

Third this weekend was the magician heist thriller Now You See Me, which has stuck around to the tune of $10M this weekend.  That brings its three week total to $80M.  Not bad for a film starring Jesse Eisenberg.

Rounding out the top five is the films Fast & Furious 6 and The Purge, which was last weeks number one film.  The film’s pulled in $9M and $8M respectively.

Here’s the full top 10:
