‘Captain Phillips’ gets first trailer, early Oscar bait

Academy Award season really never officially begins nor does it officially begin either, it’s basically a continuous loop.  Films released in any month out of the year these days seem to have an equal shot at catching the attention of Academy voters.   With Argo – 2012’s Best Picture winner – being released in early October it’s no wonder that the Michael De Luca production company (Moneyball) jumped at the opportunity to get the upcoming Tom Hanks biopic Captain Phillips the same release window.

Captain Phillips is a true story about Captain Richard Phillips and his cargo ship the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama being hijacked by Somali pirates.  It was the first American cargo vessel to be hijacked in almost 200 years.  Hanks plays the titular role of Captain Phillips and by the look of the film’s first trailer it’s going to be equal parts political thriller and action.  Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum, United 93, The Green Zone) is set to direct and he knows political thrillers with a hint of action.  I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets early Oscar buzz but tails off by January.

Still, it’s got Tom Hanks starring and he’s due for a breakout performance – his last Oscar nomination came over 10 years ago in 2001.  Hopefully he delivers.

Take a gander at the film’s first trailer.  Captain Phillips is out on October 11, 2013.
