Some franchises never die, and when you have a bonafide movie star like Tom Cruise anchoring your films its hard to stop making them.  Mission Impossible is the “never say die” action franchise that just keeps churning out films, making hundreds of millions of dollars.

According to Deadline Tom Cruise has officially signed on to star in the fifth installment of the Mission Impossible franchise.  Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions announced that Cruise will also serve as a producer on the film.  It was not revealed who would direct or pen the script, but early rumors have Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher) as both writing the script and directing.

I’m a bit disappointed that Paramount wouldn’t approach Brad Bird about coming back to direct the new film – as he directed Mission Impossible IV: Ghost Protocol.   Ghotocol ended up grossing over $700M worldwide on a $145M budget.  It’s likely that Mission Impossible 5 will have a bigger budget.

Tom Cruise will be fairly busy the next several years as a Jack Reacher sequel is already in early production after making over $200M worldwide.
