Weekend Box Office – ‘Pain and Gain’ keeps Michael Bay relevant

Posted: April 28, 2013 in Movies

Some directors just need to sail off into the sunset, never to return.  Sadly, it would appear that Michael Bay isn’t going anywhere.  Not with his most recent film – Pain and Gain – garnering the top spot at this weekend’s box office.  The film, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, managed to bring in $20M opening, which isn’t the greatest but still good enough for number one.   Pain and Gain is actually one of Bay’s lowest openings in his career (The Island, Bad Boys are the lowest), but still good enough the weekend before the summer blockbuster season actually kicks in.

Second at the weekend box office was the Tom Cruise vessel Oblivion, which pulled in $17M on its way to $64.7M in two weeks.  The film has a budget of $120M – and for a movie with only a handful of actors, that’s a HUGE budget – so it’s going to struggle its way to breaking even.

Third this weekend was the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which has been a stellar hit, bringing in nearly $11M for a three week total of $69M.  For a film that only cost $40M to make, it’s become one of the biggest success stories of the film year.

Rounding out the top five are the ensemble comedy The Big Wedding and Dreamworks animated hit The Croods.  The films managed to pull in $7.5M and $6.6M respectively.
