Weekend Box Office: One remake to rule them all

Posted: April 7, 2013 in Movies

It’s not everyday that a cult classic hard R-rated remake pulls in nearly $30M at the box office, but Evil Dead is no ordinary franchise.  The remake, directed by Fede Alvarez, starring Jane Levy/Shiloh Fernandez/Jessica Lucas quickly proved that a remake – if done correctly – can be a box office hit.  The film pulled in $26M over the weekend to claim the number one spot.

Number two this weekend was last week’s number one film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.  The sequel continued its strong pre-summer showing raking in $21M to bring its two week total to $86.6M.  Paramount has already ordered a third G.I. Joe title, so Channing Tatum has at least one more movie to just collect a paycheck in.

Third at the box office was Dreamworks animated hit The Croods, which continued strong as well pulling in $21M.  The film has quickly made back its budget domestically and will continue its strong showing until the summer’s next animated feature comes out in late May.

Rounding out the top five at the box office was Universal’s re-release of Jurassic Park in 3D and Gerard Butler’s action flick, Olympus Has Fallen.  The films pulled in $18M and 10M respectively.
