Weekend Box Office: The Rock revives ‘G.I. Joe’

Posted: March 31, 2013 in Movies

No one really wanted a sequel to the original G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra – mainly because a giant pile of crap – but when it was announced nearly a year ago that the follow-up would be delayed from a late summer 2012 release to a early spring 2013 in order to “refine the project”, I had a small slimmer of hope.  This weekend’s top film is none other than the sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, raking in $41M at the box office.  It’s not nearly as large as its original, but it’s a better film as a whole and will likely end up making back its budget in its first 5 weeks (read: until Iron Man 3 releases).   Retaliation stars Dwayne Johnson, and he’s been known as a bit of a franchise revivalist as of late (see: Fast and the Furious), so it’ll be interesting to see if there will be a third film.

Second at the box office was Dreamworks’ latest animated title The Croods which had another strong showing with $26M, bringing its two week total to $88M.  The animation company is probably heaving a sigh of relief realizing that they’re likely going to make back their money a lot sooner than they first thought.

Third this weekend was yet another piss poor Tyler Perry film, Temptations: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.  The film brought in a surprising $22M, which is right on par with just about all of Tyler Perry’s films.

Rounding out the top five were the Gerard Butler Die Har…I mean…Olympus Has Fallen and Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful.  The film’s brought in $14M and $11.6M respectively.
