Christopher Nolan wants Matthew McConaughey to star in ‘Interstellar’

The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan – one of Hollywood’s biggest names – reportedly wants Matthew McConaughey to star in his next film, the science-fiction affair Interstellar.

Deadline reports that Matthew McConaughey has been offered the lead in the film, which is about a group of physicists who embark on a journey to explore wormholes and other dimensions.  The story will be based off of Kip Thorne’s gravitational theories with the screenplay being written by Christopher Nolan’s brother, Jonathan Nolan.

Once upon a time Interstellar was firmly in the hands of Steven Spielberg to direct but that fell through and it was thought the project was dead.  Supposedly the character McConaughey would be playing is named “Cooper”.  Not much to go on, but still.

McConaughey’s career has been such a rollercoaster that the line between A-list actor and B-lister has become blurred.   McConaughey really put the movie world on notice with his stellar performance in A Time to Kill and went on to have moderate success with roles in Contact, Amistad, and The Newton Boys.  Those films launched McConaughey’s career to A-list status and his horizons broadened with big budget films such as U-571, Reign of Fire, and Sahara.  However, those film’s were chalked up to a bag of mixed reviews and relegated to McConaughey to rom-com actor with films such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch, and Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past.  Sure, McConaughey had nice films along the way such as We Are Marshall, Two for the Money, and Fool’s Gold (none of which were received well critically), the guy’s career was just sputtering.

Then The Lincoln Lawyer happened and all of the sudden McConaughey’s prospects were looking up.  He did the smart thing though, McConaughey stayed in the low light and honed his craft.  Taking lead roles in small budget films that showcased his acting skills instead of him prancing around without his shirt on.  McConaughey’s next four films after The Lincoln LawyerBernie, Killer Joe, Mud, and Magic Mike – have catapulted him back into the A-list category and is probably the main reason why Nolan wants him to star in his next film.  Sure, Interstellar is going to be a big budget affair, and yes McConaughey has been said to be a bit eccentric when it comes to the parts he chooses to play, but really, can you say no to Christopher Nolan?  The guy single-handily launched Christian Bale’s career.

Interstellar is due to release in the fall of 2014.
