Weekend box office – Jessica Chastain owns them all

Posted: January 22, 2013 in Movies

It’s been a pretty good 2013 so far for actress Jessica Chastain.  She’s gone from being nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in Zero Dark Thirty to winning a Golden Globe as Best Actress in the same role to seeing Zero Dark Thirty have acclaimed success to now being on top of the box office in consecutive weeks with two different films.  Not a bad way to start your new year.

Chastain’s new horror film – Mama – which found critical success as well, performed very well at this weekend’s MLK box office.  The film, produced by visual mastermind Guillermo del Toro, is about two little girls who witness their mother murdered by their father and run off together.  They go to live with their uncle and his girlfriend (Chastain) but they’re not alone.  Something wants them to come back to their mother…or so the tagline for the movie reads.  I’m not a huge horror genre fan, so I skipped this one.  Either way, the film pulled in a rather rounded $28.5M.

Second at this weekend’s box office was Chastain’s other film, the one where she actually acts in, Zero Dark Thirty which has been sitting pretty atop the box office for a couple of weeks now.  The movie made nearly $16M through the three day weekend, bringing its total up to $54.1M.  I bet you didn’t realize that ZDT only cost $40M to make.  Astonishing, right?

Third was the endearing David O. Russell tale of mental illness and finding the right one to love, Silver Linings Playbook.  The film has skyrocketed up the box office charts since the Golden Globes and a wider release schedule.  It made $10.7M this weekend.

Rounding out the top five was the disappointing Gangster Squad and Mark Wahlberg’s new drama, Broken City.  The films brought in $8.6M and $8.2M respectively.

*On a side note, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to leading man status in film – The Last Stand – was just that.  As the movie bombed at the box office this weekend to the tune of only $6M.  That’s rough, and by all accounts it’s not a half-bad action romp.  Oh well.
