Affleck, Bigelow, Spielberg, & others nominated by The Directors Guild

The Directors Guild of America has handed out their “Best of” award nominations and they include all the heavy hitters you’d expect.  From Ben Affleck (Argo) to Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) to Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), then there are past winners like Tom Hooper (Les Misérables) and Ang Lee (Life of Pi).

There aren’t really any surprises in that group, although you can make the case that Ang Lee really doesn’t deserve it and could have been replaced with Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) or even David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook), but Lee won’t win so I guess it’s not a big deal.

If you had a gun to my head with who would probably win, I’d say Spielberg just based on his credentials and the power of the box office.  Lincoln has made over $130M domestically and that’s pretty fucking huge considering it’s a biopic and his last film, War Horse, barely touched $50M.

The winner will be announced on February 2.
