So the debate begins. There are two types of people in this world, those who hate Ben Affleck the actor and those who love Ben Affleck the director. There is no in-between and middle ground. The debate is personified in this news that Warner Bros. Studios is considering Affleck to direct their long awaited Justice League film.
The Variety report states that Warner Bros. has already sent Affleck the Justice League script – written by Gangster Squad‘s Will Beall. Affleck is also reportedly going to meet with WB brass by the end of the week. Personally, I think Affleck would be a fine director for the Justice League film as Affleck’s vision is very dark and gritty – as seen with his films Gone Baby Gone and The Town. He’s got a real knack for capturing his environment in his movies and bringing out some pretty great performances. However, I’d be seriously concerned that Affleck might try to centralize a JL movie in Boston…could you imagine Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent with those accents? Ugh.
However, all of this hoopla could be over nothing as Deadline is reporting that Ben Affleck’s reps have already confirmed that Affleck has turned down the offer. It should be noted that Variety and Deadline are major rivals and this could all be just be two editors trying to see who’s dick is bigger. It should also be noted that Variety reported its news first, so take that for what it’s worth.
I, for one, think Affleck would be the perfect choice for a film like this. However, it would be interesting to see how he would approach handling all of these larger than life characters in a grim world (as I assume it would be based on the Dark Knight franchise and the upcoming Man of Steel settings). Does he share a similar vision as Christopher Nolan did with Batman? If one thing is for sure it’s that Affleck takes his directing very seriously and I have no doubt that Affleck would treat the Justice League property with the utmost respect.
I’ll keep you updated.
