Report: ‘Daredevil’ deadline could force Fox’s hand with Silver Surfer rights

Let’s face it, the Fantastic Four movies were steaming piles of garbage.  Admit it.  Fox royally screwed those films up and it wasn’t even close.  Doctor Doom wasn’t even really Doctor Doom in those films, he was more of a mad scientist Victor von Doom and we never really saw his true potential.  That reason alone is enough to make me want to see a potential Fantastic Four reboot.  While Marvel may never get the rights to the entire Fantastic Four franchise back, at least there’s hope for two of the more popular characters in that universe: Silver Surfer and Galactus.  Both characters were featured in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

According to Variety, Fox and Marvel are discussing parameters of a deal that would allow Fox to move forward with their planned Daredevil reboot and would send the FF character rights of Silver Surfer and Galactus back to (where they rightfully belong) Marvel Studios.  The report states that Fox has until October 10th to start filming a Daredevil film or the rights revert back to Marvel at no cost.  Further more, Fox is interested in making a deal with Marvel that would extend that deadline and give Marvel back those certain character’s movie rights if Marvel would co-finance their Daredevil project.  Apparently Fox is “very interested” in signing on director Joe Carnahan to helm the reboot in what is being described as a “Frank Miller-esque, hardcore 70s thriller”, which would be the direct opposite of what Disney/Marvel have produced in the past.  In order to do that though, they would need more time than the deadline allows.

By co-financing Fox’s Daredevil project Marvel would be given the movie rights to two of the more popular comic book figures that would play a pretty large role in their Avengers 2 project.  It would be nice if Marvel could ask for the full Fantastic Four movie rights back in agreement, but we all know that’s not happening.  Fox is currently moving forward with Chronicle director Josh Trank on a FF reboot.

It would seem that Marvel is in a win/win situation here and everything is on Fox now.  It’s near impossible that Fox finances their Daredevil reboot, signs a director, gets a cast, and starts shooting by October 10th.  Either Fox agrees to this deal or they lose Daredevil.

Joe Carnahan (Smoking Aces, The Grey) is a pretty decent choice for the Daredevil reboot as his past directing credits have been pretty gritty and what Fox might be looking for.

I’ll keep you posted though.
