New Report: ‘Daredevil’ movie rights to revert back to Marvel Studios

And this is what happens when you try to write for your blog at 12am, your current movie news becomes old movie news.  I just posted a bit about how Fox and Marvel were discussing a deal that would extend an October 10th deadline that Fox has to make a Daredevil movie in exchange for co-financing on the project and two Fantastic Four characters; Silver Surfer and Galactus.  If the Daredevil movie doesn’t get made by October 10th the movie rights to the character revert back to Marvel.  It looked like a win/win for Marvel, and while my five minute old article pointed out that everything seemed to be peachy, it appears new details have emerged stating that Fox doesn’t want to give up the Silver Surfer and Galactus movie rights, allowing Daredevil to return to Marvel Studios.

Talk about on the fly reporting!  That’s kindof a bigger deal than getting Silver Surfer back.

This Deadline report states that Fox does not intend to give up the movie rights to Galactus and will instead allow Daredevil to go back to Marvel.  If you think about it though, this makes a ton more sense than the previous “reported” trade of characters.  Why would Marvel allow Fox to keep such a lead character like Daredevil in exchange for some supporting characters that wouldn’t be able to carry their own movies?  Could you imagine Marvel trying to create an entire movie revolving around the Silver Surfer?  Yes, I’d be interested in it but you just couldn’t do it on a low budget and expect success.

With Fox moving forward with Chronicle‘s Josh Trank on their own Fantastic Four reboot, both Galactus and Silver Surfer could play a huge role in the film(s).  The impending Daredevil reboot was still a year away from even starting production, the October 10th deadline is just a bomb with a timer on it and Fox is watching it tick down without being able to do anything about it.

It also wouldn’t make much sense for Disney to co-finance the Daredevil reboot at Fox if they can get the property back in house and control production aspects there.  Why finance something you won’t have much control over anyways?   The sad part is that if the Daredevil property does go back to Marvel you can probably erase Joe Carnahan’s involvement in any way, shape, or form.  Bumstown.

Make no mistake about it, it’s still a win/win for Marvel but it’s starting to look like a much bigger “win” five minutes later.
