‘Iron Man’ could go the way of James Bond

According to Marvel Studio’s boss man Kevin Feige, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, could go the same direction in which Universal has treated James Bond over the years.

In a recent interview with Badass Digest, Feige plainly stated that the actor who plays Iron Man does not have to be the actor in originated the role.   Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Tony Stark/Iron Man for the fourth time in as many films with the upcoming Iron Man 3 due out next year.  It’s a lot of films for one actor to play a character for and it would make sense for Marvel to start thinking about who could carry on the mantle when Downey steps down.

Here’s what Feige had to say;

“I think Bond is a good example. Let’s put it this way: I hope Downey makes a lot of movies for us as Stark. If and when he doesn’t, and I’m still here making these movies, we don’t take him to Afghanistan and have him wounded again. I think we James Bond it.”

As BD suggests, Downey Jr. is getting up there in age (at least comic book movie age) as he’ll be 50 years old when The Avengers 2 is due out.  So his run as a millionaire playboy fighting intergalactic crime might be coming to an end.  However, if RDJ were to just lend his voice to the character rather than be in an actual armored suit, that could prolong his stay as Iron Man.

So who would you like to see take over Stark Industries when RDJ hangs up the suit?  Let’s look at three possibilities, shall we?

Bradley Cooper

Cooper already has that “playboy” look about him.  He’s suave, charming, sexy, and just looks like he’s got money.  All of these are musts when you’re discussing Tony Stark.  Cooper has an established action film to his credit with The A-Team and his role in Limitless required a bit of action acting, so it’s not far fetched to think he could play the role.  I think he would be on Marvel’s short list for actors to replace RDJ as they would want to go to an established actor instead of an up & comer for the part.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

JGL is almost the perfect choice for any casting role in Hollywood right now.  He could not be more popular.  Depending on what DC does with the Batman franchise and if they bring JGL back for future movies, Marvel should not think twice about swooping in and getting JGL to play Tony Stark.  He’s got all the Stark qualities plus he’s young and established.  He’s everyone’s “IT” actor right and could probably pick and choose any project he wanted.  The Iron Man franchise has established Robert Downey Jr. as one of Hollywood’s best and marked the true point of RDJ’s comeback to films.  JGL and Marvel would mutually benefit from suiting up as Iron Man.

Shia LaBeouf

Yes I know, currently Shia wouldn’t make a very good Tony Stark – simply because he’d have to do a whole lot of bulking up for the role.  But arguably when Marvel is ready to move on from RDJ as Iron Man, LaBeouf would be entering his 30’s and would, perhaps, be a big toned up.  He’s already one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and he knows how to carry an action film.  It’s basically what his career has been built on, which is a bit odd considering of the background he came from at the Disney Channel.  Either way, LaBeouf – for the wrap he gets – is a pretty good catch for any major film studio.
