‘Catching Fire’ Casting News – Finnick, Mags, & Beetee

Posted: July 18, 2012 in Movies

If you’re a huge Hunger Games fan such as myself, any little bit of news regarding the upcoming sequel, Catching Fire, is well received.  Especially when it comes to casting news for pretty important characters.  We already know who will be playing the most pivotal parts (Katniss, Gale, Peeta) but for the past few weeks we’ve been getting steady casting updates regarding smaller supporting characters.

Today seems to be much of the same as we’ve finally got confirmation of who’s going to be playing the parts of Finnick Odair, Mags, Beetee and Wiress.

Months of speculation rolled around names such as Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer, and Garrett Hedlund for the role of Finnick, but it looks like Lionsgate is going in a completely different direction entirely.  Instead of casting a relative up and coming movie star it appears they’ve opted to go with Sam Claflin for the part.  Now you may not know the name or have seen his face but he’s been in some recent summer blockbusters, most recently Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and this summer’s Snow White and the Huntsman.  He doesn’t appear to have Finnick’s charisma or extreme good looks but he’s well equipped with a bow and arrow (as seen in Snow White), so this might not be a terrible casting choice.

Other casting news points to Finnick’s District 4 mentor, Mags – the 80 year old Hunger Games winner, will be played by Oscar winning actress Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Frozen River).  It’s an interesting casting choice as Leo is only 51 years old and, as stated, Mags is a terribly old lady.  Lionsgate could be opting to change Mags age just to land an established actress for the role thus attracting a more knowledgeable movie going audience.  More star power means better results…most of the time.

The part of the electrically gifted Beetee and Wiress, a pair of former Games’ winners from District 3, will go to mainstay actors such as Tony Shalhoub and Amanda Plummer (Monk and Pulp Fiction respectively).

Catching Fire is quickly turning into a star studded affair boasting with Oscar winners, nominees, Golden Globe winners, and the like.  The movie is out next fall.
