According to multiple reports from around the internet, apparently Lionsgate and Phillip Seymour Hoffman have reached an agreement for the acclaimed actor to play a part in the The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire.
Rumors have swirled for a couple of months now that Hoffman (Capote, Moneyball) was going to be playing a part in the upcoming second film but no one knew for sure. Fans of the series clamored and clamored for Lionsgate to cast Hoffman as Haymitch Abernathy, but after the role was given to Woody Harrelson the dream of Hoffman bringing his talents to The Hunger Games serious seemed to be over. Until now.
Hoffman will be playing Gamesmaker Plutarch Heavensbee, the man responsible for creating the events that surround the Hunger Games and what transpires while the games are going on. Heavensbee doesn’t have a very big role in Catching Fire, as a matter of fact it’s very small to be honest. Heroine Katniss only interacts with Heavensbee once during the second book but the Gamesmaker plays an pivotal role in the third and final book, Mockingjay. This casting points to the future but it will still be a nice tease for what’s to come in the final movie.
A small role in Catching Fire actually makes sense for Hoffman as he has three films currently in production and set to start production. Being able to shoot his scene and get it out of the way seems like the best way to play this.
