Box Office Numbers – ‘Ted’ & ‘Magic Mike’ Bury ‘Brave’

Posted: July 1, 2012 in Movies

After a week on top Disney/Pixar’s Brave was short lived as the number one film at the box office this weekend.  Both big releases this weekend in Seth MacFarlane’s Ted and Channing Tatum’s male-stripper movie Magic Mike buried Brave to the number three spot.

Ted, MacFarlane’s first feature film directorial debut, was very well received by critics as raunchy, hilarious, but also heartfelt and it’s the main reason why the movie debuted at the number one spot making $54M.  It’s likely to be the most successful comedy this year and rivals a similar summer blockbuster from last year in Bridesmaids, which opened around the same time frame and was regarded as 2011’s best comedy.

The number two film was also just about equally as successful as Magic Mike pulled in almost $40M debuting.  A movie that stars Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey getting naked was bound to be successful, and while the movie was financially successful it was also critically very well reviewed as well.

Brave, the number three film this weekend, still brought in $34M – even though it is a dip in nearly 50% in ticket sales – which has to be a win for Pixar going up against two well regarded and much-anticipated films such as Ted and Magic Mike.  In two weeks Pixar’s Brave has made $130M+ at the box office, which is pretty good for most films.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted took the fourth and fifth spot, bringing in $26M and $11M respectively.

Fun fact: The Avenger’s have finally fallen out of the top 10 at the domestic box office.
