Weekend Box Office – ‘MIB3’ Fights Its Way Past ‘The Avengers’

Posted: May 28, 2012 in Movies

Memorial Day weekend is usually a fun time had by all as people are traveling, having cook outs, and going to the beach.  It’s the unofficial start of the summer season.  Something else people usually do over Memorial Day weekend is go to the movies.  That turned out to be true this weekend as the top three movies at the box office this weekend made over $100 million.

Will Smith’s Men in Black 3 turned out to be the movie that finally dethroned The Avengers after their month long reign at the top of the box office rankings.  The third installment of the popular alien franchise brought in $55M over the weekend, and while that number is expected to grow after Monday, the film’s major accomplishment is that it has over a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes and by all accounts is the definition of a good summer blockbuster.  It’s the first film for Will Smith in nearly four years and marks the first Men in Black film in 10 years.  It’s hard to argue against another film as MIB3 is expected to pull in over $100M in a months time.

The number two film this weekend at the box office was The Avengers, which still managed to bring in $36M this weekend.  The film has now made over half a billion dollars domestically.  That doesn’t even take into account the money the film has made over seas and all over the world.  A dramatic feat nonetheless.

The number three film this weekend was the superfailure that was Battleship.  The movie made only $10M this weekend bringing its two weekend total to only $44M.  The film cost over $200M to make and doesn’t look like its even going to come close to that here in the U.S.

The fourth and fifth films this weekend was The Dictator and The Chernobyl Diaries, bringing in $9M and $8M respectively.

Here is the full top 10 from this past weekend:
