Box Office Numbers – ‘The Avengers’ Sinks ‘Battleship’

Posted: May 20, 2012 in Movies

You know I had to use a pun in the title, it was too easy.  This weekend’s box office numbers are in and it appears that The Avengers has ruled the cinema again for the third weekend in a row.  It wasn’t even close.  The biggest movie ever made another $55 million this weekend more than doubling the amount of money made by this weekend’s biggest opening of Battleship.

The Transformers look-alike Battleship had a budget of $209M and only made $25M at the box office this weekend.  It has now officially been classified as a FLOP!  Considering that Men in Black III is coming out next weekend, it doesn’t look like Battleship will get any redemption next weekend either.

Sasha Baren Cohen’s film The Dictator opened to meager results as well pulling in only $17M.  It’s a respectable third at the box office compared to The Avengers and Battleship, but not even $20M at the start of the summer blockbuster season is disappointing for anything being compared to Borat.

Rounding out the top 5 at the box office was Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows and What to Expect When You’re Expecting bringing in $12M and $10M respectively.

Here is the top 10 box office numbers:

*Numbers in millions* (TOTALS)
