Report: ‘The Hunger Games’ Pulls In Record $155M Opening Weekend

Posted: March 25, 2012 in Movies

Are you one of the few people that did not go see The Hunger Games this weekend?  I pity you as it was really a fantastic adaptation of the beloved young adult dystopian future thriller by Suzanne Collins of the same name.  Before this weekend the film was already poised to be one of the biggest films of the year, but one of the biggest film openings of all time?  No one could say for sure.

According to a Lionsgate report the film is estimated to bring in $155 million from its opening weekend.  That figure is only third to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight, both of which opened during the summer, which makes The Hunger Games opening number even more impressive seeing how it opened in late March.  The $155M is also the biggest opening for a non-sequel of all time.

I contributed to that $155M yesterday and I’ll probably end up seeing it again before it goes to DVD/Blu-ray and I don’t have a problem contributing to the hype as it’s one of the few movie adaptations that gets it right.

I’ll have a full run down of the box office numbers from this weekend later this evening.
