It’s a much anticipated weekend for The Hunger Games fans as the movie adaptation of the immensely popular book opens in movie theaters across the country. However, midnight showings of the movies began at 12:01am this morning and it looks like the film did rather well in the vast darkness that was the middle of the night.
According to this Variety report the movie pulled in excess of $25M across the nation in midnight showings. It is right up the alley of all the predictions made by pundits that said the Lionsgate film was destined to be huge. Currently, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland holds the March box office record for a movie opening bringing in $116M its first weekend back in 2010. The Hunger Games, if it continues on its same path, is poised to shatter that record. While The Hunger Games will make vasts amount of money this weekend, it’s likely not going to touch the largest film opening in box office history, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which opened to $169M back in July 2011.
I will keep you posted on the final weekend numbers.
