Paul Rudd Is A Man’s Man, And He’s Damn Funny Too

Posted: January 21, 2012 in Movies

Paul Rudd is one of Hollywood’s most underrated actors.  Capable of playing the role of go-to funny guy to everyone’s most loveable loser, he’s done it and he’s done it well.  From Anchor Man to Our Idiot Brother Paul Rudd has made his money making everyone love to hate him.  I bet you didn’t know that Rudd has been around on screen since 1992 getting gigs on the TV show Friends and Clueless.

Let’s take a look at Rudd’s best characters from his films and why they stand out.

Brian Fantana (Anchor Man: The Legend of Ron Burgundy)

Sex Panther.  That’s really all you need to know about Brian Fantana’s character.  What is it you ask?  Good question; It’s made by Odeon and is illegal in nine countries.  It’s a cologne made from real bits of panther used to seduce the wily female anchor Veronica Corringstone.  Fantana is Ron Burgundy’s right hand man at KVWN.  He over-estimates his personal qualities but is loveable all the same.

Chuck (Forgetting Sarah Marshall)

Rudd’s character of Chuck is the stoner surfer instructor  to Jason Segel’s character Peter as he offers odd life advice that somehow makes sense.  It’s not a huge role for Rudd but it’s a lasting impression on the movie and that’s what we’ve come to expect from the character’s Rudd plays.  “When life gives you lemons say ‘fuck the lemons’ and bail.”  Hilarious.

Peter Klaven (I Love You, Man)

In Rudd’s first big-time lead role he hits it out of the park as a guy who has no friends except his fiance and needs to find a best man for his wedding.  He plays the part of loveable loner who wants nothing else but to be with his wife but is tasked with finding someone who he can hangout with on the side.  Jason Segel plays the guy Klaven finds to be his best man but when Segel’s character, Sydney Fife, becomes a little too dependent on Klaven it jeopardizes the wedding.

Ned Rochlin (Our Idiot Brother)

Ned is the classic example of the guy you know who is smokes pot, loves life, and would give you the shirt off his back.  Come on, you know you know someone like him.  Ned gets into a bit of a rough spot where he’s arrested and gets kicked out of his house by his scheming ex-girlfriend.  His sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, and Zooey Deschanel) come to his rescue but Ned quickly wears out his welcome.  However, Ned being the swell guy he is…once again makes a lasting impression on all of their lives.
