Justified vs. Southland: What To Watch Tonight

Posted: January 17, 2012 in Television

Two of television’s best shows in Justified and Southland start up their new seasons tonight respectively and if you planned on watching both you’re in for a rude awakening; their on at the same time.  Yep, for those suckers that don’t have DVR (isn’t this 2012?  who doesn’t have a damn DVR?) you’re going to be pressed to choose one over the other.  Both shows are on cable networks, so if you don’t have cable then you don’t have to worry about this, and both are on at 10pm.

Here I will make a case for both:

Here is a TV show on network (FX) that is known for their edgy programming and more relaxed morals (see Sons of Anarchy and Resuce Me).  Couple that with the fact that the show stars everyday-sexy man Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens fighting the drug trade in rural county in Kentucky.  The show has it all; good acting, good writing, good production value.  Frankly, Olyphant alone might make me watch this over anything else on TV at the same time.

Olyphant’s character is cocky, cool, suave, and smooth all at the same time.  He’s the perfect character to play an old fashioned law man and Olyphant is the perfect actor to play Raylan Givens.  The first and second seasons of the show are currently out on DVD and Blu-ray and if you haven’t caught any of the episodes yet now would be a perfect time to do so.

Justified’s third season stars tonight, 1-17-2012, at 10pm EST on FX.

Cop shows are a dime a dozen nowadays and upon first glance Southland might appear to be just another cop drama, but look harder (Rafiki voice).  Southland is a true crime drama with grit, emotion, and passion.  Its characters are real people playing real people, just in front of a camera.  The show takes place in Los Angeles and follows all levels of the LAPD; from beat cops to detectives to the politicians who try to make things happen behind the scenes.   The show stars Benjamin McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, no longer a rookie, as he tries to make sense of personal issues while being fair and just as a police officer.  Ass kicking Lucy Liu joins the cast for the fourth season as a hard nosed sergeant.

The show’s main actors are really what make the series a must watch; Regina King, Ben McKenzie, and Michael Cudlitz.  The supporting actors also bring much needed depth to the show while the setting of L.A. turns the tone of the show from dark to darker.  If you haven’t seen any episodes yet you should try to pick the first or second season up on DVD.

Southland’s fourth season airs tonight, 1-17-2012, at 10pm EST on TNT.
